Hydro-Air CMF Series Coriolis Mass Flow Meter

Coriolis Mass Flowmeter
CMF Precision Series

A Coriolis Mass Flow Meter is an inline instrument designed to directly measure the true mass flow rate, density, and temperature of liquids or gases passing through a pipe.

Unlike volumetric flow meters (e.g., magnetic, turbine, ultrasonic), a Coriolis meter measures mass directly, making it immune to changes in fluid pressure, viscosity, temperature, or density.

How It Works: The Coriolis Principle

  1. Vibration: Inside the meter housing, fluid passes through one or two curved (or straight) sensor tubes that are vibrated at their natural frequency by an electromagnetic drive coil.

  2. Deflection / Twisting: As fluid flows through the vibrating tube, the inertia of the fluid causes the tube to twist in response to the Coriolis effect.

  3. Phase Shift Measurement: Sensors placed at the inlet and outlet detect the degree of phase shift (time lag) in the tube's vibration. This phase shift is directly proportional to the mass flow rate.

  4. Density Calculation: The oscillation frequency of the tubes varies based on fluid density (denser fluids cause slower vibration), allowing real-time density measurement simultaneously.

Key Technical & Operational Advantages
Feature Engineering & Operational Benefit
Direct Mass Measurement Eliminates the need for external temperature/pressure compensation or complex calculations.
Multi-Variable Output Delivers mass flow, volumetric flow, fluid density, and process temperature from a single device.
High Accuracy & Rangeability Reaches up to ±0.05% to ±0.2% accuracy across wide turndown ratios with minimal drift over time.
No Moving Parts in Flow Path Reduces wear, maintenance downtime, and pressure drop compared to mechanical meters.
Fluid Agnostic Performs reliably with viscous fluids, slurries, non-conductive liquids, and variable chemical feeds.

Common Applications

  • Custody Transfer & Billing: Fiscal metering where high accuracy directly impacts revenue (e.g., fuel bunkering, chemical batching).

  • Process Control & Dosing: Precise chemical injection, blending, or ratio control in industrial plants.

  • Density & Concentration Monitoring: Monitoring Brix (sugar concentration), alcohol content, or chemical concentration in real time.
